Lent 2012

Lent begins on February 22nd this year.

Ash Wednesday is a time to gather and remember our own mortality and the need for repentance in our lives. In Catholic tradition the ashes are the remains of the Palms from the prior year's Palm Sunday. We have the symbolism of the joyous greeting of Jesus as he came into the city turned to the ashes of betrayal when they turned against him sentencing him to death on the cross.

As I look at my life since I turned to Christ the first time I can see that my walk with Jesus has been iffy at best. I want to follow more nearly day by day (as the song goes) but there are times when I realize that I have turned again to follow my own way. On Ash Wednesday I recommit (again) to turning and following my savior. The ashes remind me that I am only mortal. I came from dust, and to dust I shall return...but, in Jesus, the Christ, I shall be raised to eternal life. Not only that, but my life in this world will be more abundant. What a wonderful day Ash Wednesday is. A day to look back. A day to look around. And a day to look forward.

Thank you, Lord Jesus, that your blessing is eternal. I look again to you this day. Amen.
